2014 Philly Fighter of the YEar
Heavyweight Bryant Jennings took home the top award of the year for 2014. During the year he won two bouts held at MSG and televised on HBO. He beat Artur Szpilka (TKO10) and Mike Perez (W12) to become a top-ranked title contender for a shot at champion Wladimir Klitschko. Many Philly fighters had a good year in 2014, but BY BY Jennings had the best year among all of our local boxers. This award was sponsored by PhillyBoxingHistory.com.
2014 PHILLY FIGHT OF THE YEAR
On April 4, 2014, heavyweights Steve Cunningham and Amir Mansour put on an epic battle for the USBA title at the Liacouras Center in North Philly. Mansour nearly knocked out Cunningham in round five, but the former two-time cruiser champ somehow managed to get up twice and went on to win the unanimous decision over ten rounds. Simply put, it was the best Philly fight of 2014, and one of the best Philly fights of all time.
2014 PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR
When Steve Cunningham hit the canvas for the second time in round five against Amir Mansour, no one expected him to get up, let alone go on to win the fight. But that is who Steve Cunningham is. He summoned a strength few others possessed and display his heavyweight heart in this incredible performance. It was truly one for the ages. This award was sponsored by PhillyBoxingHistory.com.
